Keylong serves as the administrative headquarters of Lahaul district, but it functions as a genuine working town rather than a purpose-built tourist base — something increasingly rare along the Manali–Leh corridor. At 3,100m, the Shashur monastery sits on a rise just above town, worth the short climb for its setting alone. Best time is June–September. For travelers passing through en route to Spiti or Leh, Keylong is a chance to experience real Lahauli community life rather than another roadside stopover built purely around passing traffic.
